The upgrading of the Upper Eglinton Canal Towpath at University Road is due to begin shortly, after funding was secured by the Department of the Environment.
A new footbridge on the canal will be installed as part of the overall project which will eventually link the NUI, Galway campus and with Fisheries Field.
The works have been approved by the Corrib Navigation Trustees. Its chairman, Fine Gael councillor Pádraig Conneely, said that ongoing work on the Eglinton Canal will continue as part of the overall upgrading of the city’s canals.
