THIS YEAR marks the bicentenary of the death of Joseph Haydn, one of the giants of classical music. To mark this occasion, Galway will hear Haydn’s music performed by The Haydn Trio Eisenstadt.
The Haydn Trio Eisenstadt is one of Austria’s leading chamber music ensembles and according to Fono Forum, “There is no current piano trio formation who is so intensively committed to Joseph Haydn’s work”.
The trio - Harald Kosik (piano ), Verena Stourzh (violin ), and Hannes Gradwohl (cello ) - will play the Aula Maxima, NUI, Galway on Monday October 12 at 8pm, as part of Music for Galway’s concert programme.
Born in Austria, Franz Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809 ) was one of the most important, prolific, and prominent composers of the classical period. He is often called the “Father of the Symphony” and the “Father of the String Quartet” because of his important contributions to these genres. He was also instrumental in the development of the piano trio and in the evolution of sonata form. He was a close friend of Mozart and a teacher of Beethoven.
Founded in 1992, the Haydn Trio Eisenstadt’s members received instruction in chamber music from Georg Ebert at the Vienna Academy of Music. In 1994, the Accademia Chigiana in Siena bestowed on the Haydn Trio Eisenstadt the Honorary Diploma for the “best piano trio” and an award for the “best foreign contribution” of the entire festival.
For their Galway concert they will perform Haydn’s Trio in C Major, Hob XV/27 and Trio in E flat major, Hob XV/29. They will also perform pieces by Beethoven and William Bolcom.
