Loughrea’s second triathlon a huge success

Some 400 athletes from all over Ireland made Loughrea’s second triathlon a resounding success at the weekend.

The competition was organised by the Predator Triathlon Club at Loughrea’s Blue Flag lake and was supported by SAP and O’Briens Sandwich Bars,Galway.

The one day event attracted entrants from as far as Armagh, Dublin, and Cork with all entrants competing at swimming, cycling, and running. The junior event boasted more than 40 competitors this year which saw children from the age of eight to 17 taking part. There was a big interest in the women’s mini-triathlon with 43 competitors, while the main sprint event boasted a record 312.

The winner of the junior event was Mark Nolan with a time of 16.52 . The women’s mini triathlon winner was Laura Casey in a time of 33.09. Niamh Richardson won the women’s sprint event in a time of 1.15.33, coming in an impressive 19th place in the overall event, while Ruadhri Geraghty claimed the honours in the men’s sprint triathlon in a time of 1.04.42.
