Shock as popular businessman loses his life in weekend of road tragedies

Well-known local businessman David Kelly was one of two people killed on the county’s roads over the weekend.

Mr Kelly (37 ), a father of three young children, died when his car struck a wall on the Moycullen road in the early hours of Saturday.

The accident occurred at 4.10am close to the Glenlo Abbey Hotel.

Mr Kelly was brought to University College Hospital following the collision, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Mr Kelly was travelling alone at the time of the accident.

Mr Kelly, who lived in Monument Road, Menlo, and was originally from Oughterard, was a well known and respected businessman.

He and his wife ran Kelly’s bar, formerly the Living Room, in Bridge Street in the city.

He is survived by his wife Joan, and three children, as well as his mother Margaret, brother, and sisters.

People who came into contact with him socially and professionaly have been expressing their shock at his untimely death.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the accident to contact Galway Garda station at (091 ) 538000.

Meanwhile the young man who died following a hit and run collision near Barna in the early hours of Sunday has been named as Andrew Walsh (19 ) from Fethard, Co Tipperary.

It is understood Mr Walsh had attended a 21st birthday party at Bearna Golf Club and was walking home when he was struck by a vehicle close to Paddy’s Cross at around 2.45am.

Mr Walsh was found by a passing taxi driver shortly after the accident, and emergency services pronounced the young student dead at the scene of the accident.

Gardaí subsequently arrested two men — a 21-year-old and a minor — in relation to the accident. Both men were released without charge and a file on the incident is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who was on the Barna-Moycullen road between 1.30am and 3am on Sunday to contact Salthill Garda station at (091 ) 514720.
