O’Shea scoops first Connacht squash title

Galway players impressed in this year’s Elvery’s Sports Connacht Junior Squash Open which was held in Galway Lawn Tennis Club last weekend.

The best result of the weekend was in the girls’ u-13 section in which Roisin O’Shea (Salthill ) claimed the title after beating Stephanie Ryan (Dublin ) 3-0 in the final. The Irish number 1 played some excellent squash over the weekend to claim her first Connacht title.

In the girls u-i5 section Fiona Power (Knocknacarra ) narrowly missed out on the title. The current Irish international was defeated 3-0 by Breanne Flynn (Dublin ).

Conor O’Shea from Salthill competed in the u-17 final against Daniel Harkin (Dublin ) but was beaten 3-0. O’Shea had been in fantastic form throughout the weekend, claiming his spot in the final after a thrilling semi-final victory.

Jennifer Hegarty (Bushypark ) returned to form when she reached the final of the girls u-17 section. However Elaine Ware (Carlow ) defeated Hegarty 3-1 after a closely-fought final.

The Connacht open is the traditional curtain raiser of the Irish Squash junior tour and continues to be one of the most popular events on the calendar. Some 25 players from Galway competed.

The Galway squad will now travel to Belfast for the next event where the players will be challenging for positions on Irish squads.
