A little bit of Kensington Palace in Galway

There are not many properties in the world that can boast some of the finishes found in Kensington Palace, but this is true in the case of Barna Gardens. The antique door knobs found on the double doors that open into the main reception hall come directly from the palace. Inspired by its present owners and designed by nationally acclaimed architect Pat McCabe of Simon J Kelly & Co, the house was built within the original walled garden of Barna House. “Without a doubt this is one of the finest homes ever built in Galway,” said Colm O’Donnellan of agents O’Donnellan & Joyce. “The likes of this unimaginable home will not be found again.”

The house is accessed via a picturesque lime tree-lined avenue just off the Barna Road; these magnificent trees have now grown together to form a continuous arch. The avenue is lit by a row of antique style lanterns. This superb entrance hints at the grandeur that lies behind the brick façade of Barna Gardens. With the avenue behind, you then enter a splendid forecourt which is surrounded by spectacular terrace gardens, and from the veranda you overlook a sylvan setting.

The superb entrance hall contains a magnificent marble staircase with specially commissioned V Soske Joyce carpets. The house has four substantial reception rooms with considerable character, including ornate ceilings, antique fireplaces, and antique style wall lights. The substantial kitchen/dining room/family room has an extensive range of antique pine locally manufactured country style units and is complemented by a large island in the centre and granite worktop. Magnificent French doors open onto the rear terraced gardens and two similar ceiling to floor windows complete this area. The rear recreational area, which provides a wonderful swimming pool and Jacuzzi together with changing room and shower, has cream French limestone floors throughout and comprises a total area of 42ft x 28ft. It contains two magnificent windows overlooking the rear gardens and French doors to the side that open on to the terrace gardens. The pool area contains double doors that lead into a magnificent sunroom which is also floored with cream French limestone, this in turn opens out on to an enclosed garden to the side.

The first floor has a gallery wraparound landing with feature windows that overlook the front courtyard and avenue with Barna Woods beyond. The south/west facing master bedroom, which measures 28’6” x 16’6”, has three large windows — two to the front and one to the side allowing an abundance of natural light to flow into this amazing room. Solid oak floors, two walk-in dressing areas, and a full bathroom en suite complete this incredible space. Three other double bedrooms with full en suites are also located on this level, together with what the owners call the back stairs providing access to the ground and second floors. The second floor contains three bedrooms, all with en suites, one of which enjoys panoramic views of Galway Bay and the Clare Hills beyond.

The house stands on a site offering just over an acre of the most incredible gardens which have been landscaped and designed by leading international landscape architect Jim Reynolds. Two summerhouses based on Hidcote Manor in the Costswolds Hills in the UK are located to the rear close to the river. This is a haven of tranquillity that is within walking distance of Silverstrand beach and Barna Woods while at the same time being only four miles from Eyre Square.
