Fine Gael in Galway is on an election footing and its party HQ is compiling a review of the Galway West constituency.
Given the unpopularity of the current Fianna Fáil/Green coalition, a General Election within the next six to 12 months is not an impossibility and Fine Gael HQ is already preparing for such a possibility.
The party has targeted the five seat constituency of Galway West as being a place where the party can make a gain in the next General Election.
The last time FG held two seats in Galway West was 1982. However the party believes its rise in the polls and the unpopularity of Fianna Fáil puts Frank Fahey at risk and that a seat may be in the offing if it gets its strategy and candidate selection right.
FG HQ has already begun a review of the constituency, examining the local election results in detail, how the organisation performed, and what needs to be done to have a chance of winning a second seat. Once the review is completed next month, HQ will discuss it with party members and councillors in Galway.
