City gets major increase in taxi ranks

Galway city now has 110 taxi spaces, an increase of 39 spaces, following approval for new bye-laws from councillors this week. Some 43 new temporary taxi spaces have also been introduced.

At Monday’s city council meeting, councillors were presented with a proposed set of new bye-laws that will result in a significant increase in the number of permanent and temporary taxi ranks in the city.

The permanent ranks will operate 24 hours a day while the temporary ranks will operate from 6.30pm to 5.30am in areas which are loading bays and disc parking days at other times of the day.

The taxi stands in Galway are now located at Ballybane Road (three 24 hour spaces ); Bridge Street (seven 24 hour spaces and eight temporary ); eastern Eyre Square (10 24 hour and four temporary ); northern Eyre Square (25 24 hour spaces ); Liosban Industrial Estate (six 24 hour ); and Market Street (eight temporary spaces ).

Merchants Road (eight temporary spaces ); Middle Street (six temporary ); Newcastle Road (four 24 hour ); Plunkett Avenue (four 24 hour ); Prospect Hill (four 24 hour ); Renmore Road (five 24 hour ); Renmore Road (five 24 hour ); Salthill Road Lower (four 24 hour ); and Salthill Road Upper (11 24 hour and 10 temporary ).

Thomas Hynes Road (six 24 hour ); University Road (seven 24 hour ); Wellpark Road (three 24 hour ); Western Distributor Road (five 24 hour ); and Woodquay (five 24 hour ).
