Galway-based and trained boxer Michael Sweeney steps into the ring and the television spotlight on Saturday night when he takes on Jamie Power in an All-Ireland duel in The O2 in Dublin.
These two undefeated light heavyweight fighters are on the undercard of Bernard Dunne’s Hunky Dorys World Title Fight Night which is being televised by RTE.
Ballinrobe-born Sweeney, known in boxing circles as the Storm, is trained by Rosmuc’s Sean Mannion, and since turning professional in October 2007 he has eight fights under his belt, with seven wins and one draw. His opponent Jamie Power is an old friend - both have come through the amateur ranks, winning several Irish titles, and both are undefeated in their pro careers.
Mannion and John Hesnan have taken over Sweeney’s management recently after a difficult year during which Sweeney had only one fight, and Sweeney says he’s now “determined to make up for the past year with a big performance”.
“It should be a great fight between two unbeaten Irish guys. We both have good amateur pedigree and we’re both at around the same stage in our pro careers so we match up well.”
The 25-years-old is confident his fast feet and big reach will win the day.
“ I’m full of confidence right now and this could be just the break I was looking for.”
Co-manager John Hesnan has high ambitions for Sweeney. “We are looking at going all the way - Irish, European, and World titles. Michael is very focused and confident. He doesn’t have a sponsor at present, so it is an ideal opportunity for anyone wanting to come on board now.”
