Secondary school trad songwriters sought for new competition

East Galway secondary school students with an interest in writing new Irish traditional music or reinterpreting old standards in new ways are being asked to take part in the Do Sheans ar CD competition.

The County Galway VEC, the Galway County Council and Gaeilge Locha Riach have come together to organise this special competition for 2009.

Applications will be accepted in the form of story, poetry, or song in the categories Ábhar Nuachumtha (newly composed ) or Ábhar traidisiúnta ar stíl úrnua (traditional in a new style ).

It is recommended that a three minute recording be provided with each application. Fourteen tracks will be chosen to be recorded in a professional manner for a CD that will be launched for Christmas.

The winners will be screened on TG4’s Ponc and broadcast on RnaG. There will also be prizes for the best entrants in the above categories.

Schools are asked to register an interest in this competition before September 25 and applications will be accepted up until Thursday October 22.
