Be car free in Loughrea

Galway County Council has confirmed details of Streets Alive, an event to be held on Main Street, Loughrea on Tuesday September 22 to mark European Mobility Week and ‘In town without my car’, a car free day.

Experience Main Street as a community space as it hosts a mini zoo and animal roadshow including a range of exotic reptiles and wildlife. Streets Alive is intended to give members of the public a unique opportunity to learn more about wildlife through workshops and more hands on experience that can be allowed when viewing such animals at the zoo.

Streets Alive is being planned as a family friendly fun event with a section of Main Street being closed to allow for its transformation into a pedestrian friendly community space with cartoon characters, face painting, balloon modelling and street theatre taking place at different times during the day.

In addition, those visiting Streets Alive or conducting business on Main Street can enter a draw for a range of prizes sponsored by the Galway County Council to mark ‘In town without my car’.

The event intends to challenge people to pause and question what our streets are really for, and consider the appropriate balance to be achieved between street users and forms of transport.
