A civic reception should be held in City Hall in the coming weeks to honour Galway’s All-Ireland Minor Hurling champions, especially as there was no ‘homecoming’ event for the team.
This is the view of Fianna Fáil councillor Ollie Crowe, who will be proposing that City Hall host a civic reception for the team at Monday’s city council meeting.
Cllr Crowe has expressed disappointment that Galwegians were not given an opportunity to welcome back the team which beat Kilkenny to take the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Title in Croke Park this month.
“The people of Galway city are extremely proud of the achievement of their Galway Minor Hurling team,” he said. “However, I do not understand why the team did not return to the city on its home journey.”
Cllr Crowe said he has been contacted by people from across this city, as well as Carnmore, Claregalway, Oranmore, and Abbeyknockmoy, who were “bitterly disappointed that they were unable to welcome home their hurling heroes”.
Cllr Crowe said he does not know if the situation is a result of a Galway GAA County Board decision or a decision by the Galway City Council. However he has contacted City Hall to establish why a home-coming event did not take place.
“It is customary for an All-Ireland winning team to travel to its provincial town,” said Cllr Crowe. “In 2007, Galway city supporters came out in their droves to welcome home the Galway Minor Football team on their All-Ireland victory.”
