HMS Bounty to star at the Galway Oyster Festival

The most photographed square rigged sail ship in the world, the HMS Bounty, will be part of this year’s Galway International Oyster Festival.

Brian J O’Higgins, chairman of the Galway International Oyster Festival, announced the HMS Bounty will host the starting ceremony of this year’s festival in Galway Docks, while the Mayor of Galway, Cllr Declan McDonnell, will taste the traditional first oyster of the season on board the vessel.

The craft will also be open to the public during the festival weekend. Known for a maritime mutiny that took place more than 200 years ago, the Bounty remains famous and infamous. She has featured in many movies. In 1960 Marlon Brando was Fletcher Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty, while more recently Johnny Depp appeared on board as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.

The HMS Bounty Organisation is dedicated to keeping the ship sailing and using her as a vehicle for teaching the nearly lost arts of square rigged sailing and seamanship.

The organisation operates a variety of programmes on board including sail training programmes for the general public, group leadership and teamwork training, a sail away summer camp program, and dockside educational programmes for elementary and secondary school children.
