Chinese night in aid of Croi

The Chinese restaurant, the Royal Villa in Salthill, has teamed up with local heart charity Croí to host a novel Chinese evening on Tuesday September 29.

This event includes a three course meal with wine, and Chinese cooking demonstrations by chef Charlie Chan.

Speaking at the launch of the event Croí’s event co-ordinator Seona Joyce said the charity was very grateful to Royal Villa for its generosity in hosting the evening.

“Due to their support and the support of their suppliers all of the proceeds from the night can go directly towards the fight against heart disease in the west of Ireland.”

More than 100 people in Galway city participated in a new Croi initiative recently aimed at reducing their risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Vital funds will be raised through this Chinese evening to support this and other community heart health programmes.

The project, which is similar to the popular TV series How long will you live?, aims to change the lifestyles of 450 people in the west considered to be most at risk from heart disease, Ireland’s biggest killer. The free 16-week “Croí MyAction” programme - the first of its kind in Ireland - is committed to reducing the incidence of heart attack, diabetes and stroke among local people. It provides participants with a potentially lifesaving lifestyle makeover, adding years to their lives.

People are invited to take part in this innovative initiative by their GP practice, through the Croí ‘Heart Smart’ programme (community high risk screening ) and hospital departments such as cardiology and endocrinology. Their referral is based on risk factors such as family history, raised blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, cholesterol levels, physical activity levels and smoking. They are guided through a change programme delivered by a team of nurses, exercise and nutritional specialists.

Croi says the project involves the person at risk taking action on diet, smoking, exercise, weight, and lifestyle generally. These issues will be addressed in one-to-one appointments with team members. People will also participate in group exercises and health promotion workshops,

Tickets for the Chinese evening cost €30 per person and early booking is advisable. They can be bought individually or by tables of six to eight.
