Galway City Arts Office, Galway Refugee Support Group, and Solas Community Arts have come together to launch a stunning photography exhibition showcasing the creative skills of the refugee communities resident in Galway city.
Featuring the entries in this year's Galway Refugee Support Group World Refugee Day photography competition and other fine work produced in association with Solas Community Arts the exhibition is a moving testament to the unflagging creative spirit of the participating artists.
The official launch will take place today at 6pm in City Hall, College Road, Galway. Vivid, heartfelt, and accomplished, the photographs, taken by members of Galway’s refugee community are all accompanied by captions giving insights into the stories behind the photographs, the artists' own words reflecting upon perceptions, privacy, stigma, racism, property, and the meaning of home.
Seeking to create an intercultural dialogue about the concepts of hospitality and welcome, home and community, asylum and refuge in Ireland the exhibition gives insight into the world that is home for asylum seekers living in the State Direct Provision accommodation system in Galway city.
There will also be live entertainment and refreshments on the night of the launch, celebrating an extraordinary exhibition by some of Galway's most remarkable community artists. The exhibition is on display in City Hall during normal business hours Monday through to Friday until the end of September.
