The Waters and the Wild, an exhibition of some 60 paintings and drawings inspired by the landscape of the Burren, is open to the public from August 22 to August 30 at The Mountscribe Gallery, near Kinvara, Co. Galway. The exhibition is the work of Helen Frayling, who has been painting and drawing in and around the Burren for 10 years and more.
Helen Frayling trained at the Royal Academy School and the Royal College of Art in London. She has exhibited at the Royal Academy and The New Art Centre in London, and has worked with the celebrated community arts group Free Form in East London.
She has numerous close family connections with rural County Galway, and has been passionate about the west of Ireland since she rode horseback, with her cousins, in the fields around Kilcolgan when she was a small child. Through those same cousins, she is distantly related to the Gregory family, including Lady Gregory’s son Robert, the ‘Irish airman’ immortalised by WB Yeats, who also trained at art school in London before creating his own paintings of “cold Clare rock and Galway rock and thorn”.
Helen Frayling says: “I can never tire of the Burren – the light and colour are changing all the time, a sense of endless fascination. The thing is to try to capture the moment.”
