Remand for man accused of stealing woman’s handbag

A young man accused of allegedly attacking a woman and then stealing her handbag has been remanded in custody after being refused bail, and is due to appear in court again next week for the service of the book of evidence.

Jack Watchorn (18 ), with an address at Aras Gael, Whitestrand Avenue, Salthill, was brought before the holiday sitting of Galway District Court last Tuesday facing charges of allegedly robbing a woman of her handbag and its contents, valued at €150, at The Promenade, Salthill, on February 21, 2009.

Inspector Mick Coppinger told the court that the DPP had consented to summary disposal of the charge on a plea only. However after hearing a brief outline of the State’s case Judge Conal Gibbons refused jurisdiction deeming it be too serious to be heard in the district court.

Judge Gibbons then refused bail and remanded Watchorn in custody to appear again at Galway District Court on August 25 next for service of the book of evidence. Legal aid was then granted and an order was made for Watchorn to received urgent medical attention.
