NUI Galway students’ union will host an information session on higher education maintenance grants in the city next week.
The evening, which is organised in conjunction with GMIT students’ union and the Union of Students in Ireland, aims to reduce the confusion faced by incoming students when applying for the maintenance grant.
Students will receive their first round CAO offers on Monday and must apply for the grant within two weeks. Incorrectly completed forms can lead to delays in grant applications being processed and payment being made.
“This year more than ever, thousands of students will depend on getting a maintenance grant to go to college,” said NUIG SU president Donna Cummins. “The information evening is an excellent opportunity for students and parents to avoid the red tape and paperwork of applying for a grant. If incoming students ensure their application is correct from the start it could save a lot of time for students and their parents. Incorrect forms can lead to late payment of grants which places further financial strain on people who are already dealing with the added financial pressures of third level education.”
The information evening will take place on Wednesday August 19 from 6pm to 8pm in Galway City Library. Incoming first year students and their parents are encouraged to attend. Grant application forms will be available on the evening.
