Man fined for urinating in shopping centre

A drunk man who relieved himself on the floor of a city centre shopping centre, right next to the toilets, has been fined €200.

At the summer sittings of the Galway District Court last Tuesday Noel McGrath (42 ) with an address given as Cork Simon Community, Anderson’s Quay, Cork, pleaded guilty to urinating in public, contrary to public decency, and to being intoxicated in a public place at Eyre Square Shopping Centre on May 14, 2009.

Inspector Pat McHugh told the court that at 3.30pm gardai received reports that a “very drunk” man was urinating on the floor outside the toilets at Eyre Square Shopping Centre. The inspector added that security staff had attempted to stop the defendant from urinating as it had covered the floor and members of the public were walking on it.

The court heard that McGrath has 16 previous convictions which include public order offences and failing to appear in July 2009.

Judge Aeneus McCarthy convicted the defendant and fined him €200 with one month to pay for urinating in public. The remaining charge was taken into consideration.
