RnaG to air interview with Máirín de Valera

RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta listeners are to be treated this coming Monday to a rare interview with Máirín de Valera, daughter of Éamon de Valera.

The interview, which was recorded in 1974, is one of the very few given by Máirín who was known to be notoriously publicity shy and shunned the limelight. She had a strong connection with Galway, and was the first professor of botany appointed to UCG, as it was known at the time, in 1962. She taught many classes there, in both English and Irish, and worked closely with Professor Pádraig Ó Céidigh.

In the programme, Máirín talks about her upbringing, the memories she had of Harry Boland and Michael Collins visiting her family home, and her passion for botany and for Galway and the west of Ireland.

The programme will be aired on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta on Monday, August 10, at 1.30pm.
