THE IRISH Baroque Orchestra will celebrate the music of Haydn when it plays St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Friday August 14 at 8pm in association with Music for Galway.
The orchestra, with Monica Huggett (director and violin ) and Sarah McMahon (violoncello ), will perform Haydn’s Symphony no 44 in E minor Hob 1/44 and his Cello Concerto in C Major Hob VIIb/I. They will also play Mozart’s Symphony no 40 in G minor KV 550.
This year marks the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death. Symphony No 44 was written in 1772 at the height of the German philosophical and artistic movement called Sturm und Drang.
Sturm und Drang’s protagonists endeavoured to give free expression to extremes of emotion, particularly agitated, fearful or violent emotions. The movement was a response to the confines of rationalism and the Enlightenment.
Mozart’s Symphony No 40 in G Minor was written in 1788 during an extraordinary burst of creativity. Through June, July and August of that year he wrote his last three symphonies as well as many other chamber works and a piano concerto.
Sarah McMahon will take the spotlight to perform Haydn’s exquisite and charming Cello Concerto in C Major.
