Maigh Cuilinn travel to Kerry this Saturday evening for an intriguing National League encounter with Killorglin, where both sides will be anxious to build some momentum in the early stages of the season.
Tip-off is at 7.15pm at Killorglin Sports Complex, with the Galway visitors facing a side whose early-season struggles have been one of the more surprising developments in the competition.
Relegated from the Super League at the end of last season, Killorglin might reasonably have been expected to be among the leading contenders in National League Division One this year. However, the Kerry outfit have struggled to adjust to life back in the second tier, losing three of their opening four games.
Their solitary victory came last weekend, when they overcame Dublin side Templeogue 80–72, a result which may signal that Killorglin are beginning to find their feet in the competition. Maigh Cuilinn will be hoping that any revival is still in its infancy when the sides meet on Saturday.
Despite their disappointing record, there is little doubt about the quality within the Killorglin ranks.
The Kerry side are led by Irish senior international Jordan Blount, a player with considerable experience at the highest level of domestic basketball. Blount is averaging 18 points per game this season and provides Killorglin with an imposing and versatile offensive presence.
Their leading scorer is American guard Lamar Lovelace, who is averaging 21 points per outing. At 6ft 2in, Lovelace is a quick and aggressive offensive player who puts considerable pressure on opposing defences with his ability to attack off the dribble and create scoring opportunities.
For the visitors, much will depend on whether they can rediscover the offensive fluidity that deserted them for long stretches of last weekend's defeat in Carrickmacross. Against a Killorglin side that has yet to find consistency, Maigh Cuilinn will be hoping that better movement away from the ball and a more balanced scoring contribution can provide the platform for an important away victory.
Killorglin's record may suggest an opportunity, but their recent Super League experience and the individual talent at their disposal make them dangerous opponents, particularly on their home floor.
With both sides having plenty to prove, Saturday's contest promises to be an interesting examination of where they stand in the developing National League campaign.
