Beloved clothing outfitter’s Dervan’s is celebrating ninety years of business, having first opened its doors in Loughrea on October 9, 1936.
Beginning with Bernard Dervan’s “One Price House”, meaning everyone paid the same regardless of bargaining ability, the founding ethos of the business remains to this day.
Bernard made the brave choice at the time to charge one price, and as he wrote in the opening newspaper advertisement: “the cash prices, marked clearly on every garment, will ensure honest value to every purchaser.”
Bernard, who had left the family farm to take up a drapery apprenticeship in Loughrea, set his sights on opening his own business. In 1936, that became a reality when his brother Pat won the Sweepstakes and lent some capital to get the business running.
It thrived under Bernard’s leadership through the rationing of World War II, expanding in size and range of products. But it turned out to be the choice of Loughrea town was the wisest move Bernard made, when the Tynagh Mines opened in 1965.
Further extensions followed, and in 1973 footwear was added to the shop’s offerings. In 1976, Gerard, Bernard’s son joined the business with his wife, Mary. By the time Bernard passed away in 1993, he left a timeless legacy of business values.
Throughout the challenges of the Celtic Tiger and the drastic changes in consumer habits, the family business survived with hard work and loyal customers.
Whether in-store or online, Dervan’s carefully curates quality clothing and footwear, providing the personal touch of a boutique with the range of a department store.
Nine decades on, Dervan’s remains committed to honest value, quality service, and lasting style. Visit the shop in person at 62-65 Main Street, Loughrea (H62 VX03 ) or online at https://dervansfashions.ie/
