McGowan earns double victory

Galway City Harriers' Feidhlim McGowan won the Run Galway Bay Marathon last Saturday, adding to his victory at the Loughrea 10k on September 27.

McGowan pulled clear of Niall Geoghegan to win last weekend's Run Galway Bay Marathon in a time of 2:30.08. After going through the opening lap together, Geoghegan came in at 2:32.08 to claim second place.

Michael O'Connor was third in 2:34.34, also taking first place in the over-40 category, in a field of 611 finishers.

Katie Parker was the convincing winner of the women's marathon in a time of 2:55.39, finishing 13th overall. She was a staggering 14 minutes clear of second place Sophie O'Neill in 3:09.40. Joanna O'Byrne completed the women's podium in 3:13.17.

In the Half Marathon, Jake O'Regan of St Johns AC won in 1:08.32, leading home a field of 1,828 finishers. Daniel Jares Hinojosa was second in 1:10.03, with Darren Kilkelly third in 1:16.23.

Dee Grady of Ennis Track was the first woman home, finishing sixth overall in an impressive 1:18.23.

The 10k drew 1,779 finishers and was won by Tadhg O'Sullivan in 31.57, more than a minute clear of Simon Farrell in 33.07, with Eanna O'Bradaigh third in 33.12. Hannah Steeds, from Leevale AC, was first woman home, finishing a fine sixth overall in 34.30.

Loughrea 10k

McGowan was the clear winner of the Loughrea 10k as he crossed the line in 33.06 to finish well over a minute ahead of Donal Coakley of Leevale, who was second in 34.22 and first over-40.

Simon O'Toole completed the men's podium in 36.23, in a field of 229 finishers.

The women's race was a close contest, as Yvonne Fehily took the honours in 44.17, finishing 31st overall, just nine seconds ahead of Liz Carroll in 44.26. Tricia Brien was third woman home in 45.51.
