A PROSPECTIVE bridegroom pleaded with a Judge that his wedding had already been delayed by a month because of what he considered onerous bail conditions set by Gardaí which prevented him from going to reside in his fiancée’s county of Donegal.
Bernie Corcoran, 4, An Creggaun, Ballinasloe, told Judge James Faughnan at Ballinasloe District Court that his troubles began when he was arrested three times during his stag night celebrations in the town.
As a result, Gardaí in Ballinasloe set strict bail conditions, one of which is that if he was moving address from the one provided to Gardaí then he would have to provide that new address to them and have it approved.
Garda Sgt Christy Browne told Judge Faughnan that no specific address or postcode had yet been provided and Corcoran simply stating that he wished to move to Lifford in Donegal was not sufficient. He added that Gardaí were unable to verify whether Corcoran would be welcome at any address in Donegal.
Corcoran protested that his wedding had already been put back a month because of the bail conditions imposed on him.
“That’s not our fault,” Judge Faughnan told him. Unless the Gardaí are happy that a valid address can be provided and verified as part of bail conditions, that’s were matters stand, he explained.
“I was arrested three times on the one day, my stag night,” Corcoran pleaded.
“That’s not our fault either. You’re on bail and you must abide by your bail conditions,” Judge Faughnan told him.
Sgt Brown added: “As matters stand we have been provided with no address in Donegal, no postcode, no nothing, and unless and until this changes the current bail conditions remain in place.”
