Merlin College has proudly introduced cricket as a mainstay extracurricular activity, responding to the growing number of students who wished to participate in the sport while also reflecting the school’s deeply inclusive ethos.

The initiative was designed to ensure that every student feels represented, welcomed, and encouraged to engage in activities that support both sporting development and wellbeing.

Since its introduction last year, cricket has enjoyed outstanding popularity across the school community. Students from a wide range of backgrounds have embraced the opportunity to learn new skills, build friendships, and experience the excitement of team competition. Much of the success of the programme is due to the commitment and enthusiasm of teacher Ruairi Mullen, whose leadership has helped establish cricket as an important part of student life.

Significant support has also been provided by Cricket Ireland development officer Sarah Barry, whose expertise and dedication have been invaluable in helping the sport flourish at Merlin College.

Principal John Cleary said he wanted Merlin College to be an outlier by introducing cricket to students, believing it would complement the diverse range of sports and activities for which the school has already become known. He noted that cricket provides another avenue for participation and inclusivity, ensuring that students with different interests can find a sporting activity that suits them.

Mr Cleary added that he was excited to be part of the genesis of school cricket in the west of Ireland and looked forward to Merlin College leading the charge by competing in Munster and Leinster competitions in the future.

Merlin College has its open night on Thursday, October 1 between 7pm and 9pm. All sixth class students and parents are welcome.
