Loughrea Tennis Club has marked a major milestone in style, winning the 40th anniversary edition of the Midland League.
The victorious Loughrea team of Josie Connaughton, Marie Barrett, Georgina Dunleavy (captain ), Niamh Lawless and Alison Kubov produced a superb series of performances throughout the competition to bring the title home to Loughrea.
Club chairperson and team captain Georgina Dunleavy said the victory was particularly special given the significance of this year’s competition.
"Winning the Midland League is a wonderful achievement for the team, but to do it in the 40th anniversary year makes it all the more special. There was a great sense of determination and camaraderie among the team throughout the competition, and we are absolutely delighted to bring the title back to Loughrea.
"We also had tremendous encouragement from our fellow club members along the way. That support meant a huge amount to us and we want to thank everyone who got behind the team."
The victory is the latest chapter in what has been a remarkable period of growth and development for Loughrea Tennis Club.
Situated on a beautiful lakeside site in the town, the club has developed superb playing facilities, established strong coaching and player development pathways, and grown its membership steadily over the past decade. The club now has more than 230 members, reflecting the growing popularity of tennis in the area.
Georgina Dunleavy said the club’s success on court reflects the strength of the wider club community.
"We are incredibly fortunate in Loughrea to have excellent tennis facilities in such a beautiful setting. Over recent years we have worked hard to build a club that is welcoming, ambitious and accessible to everyone.

The Midland League victory provides another reason to celebrate for a club that continues to go from strength to strength, both competitively and as an important part of Loughrea’s sporting community.
