A camera found in Galway almost two decades ago could finally be reunited with the people who owned it, thanks to one man’s decision to hold on to it in the hope that its owners might one day be found.
In July 2007, Brian Flanagan found an Olympus digital camera in Eyre Square, Galway. Rather than simply handing it in or disposing of it, Brian decided to keep the camera, believing that there might eventually be a way to trace the people whose memories were stored inside it.
Nineteen years later, remarkably, he still has both the original camera and its memory card — and the photographs on it provide a fascinating glimpse into a holiday taken by a group of young friends.
The images appear to document a journey through France and Ireland, with photographs placing the group in Bordeaux, Paris, Dublin, the Aran Islands and, eventually, Galway.
It was in Eyre Square that the trail appears to have ended, when the camera was lost.
Now, after almost two decades, Brian is making a renewed effort to identify the people in the photographs and return the camera, along with the original images, to its rightful owners.
“I’m hoping the Galway Advertiser might be interested in helping solve a local 19-year-old mystery,” Brian told us this week.
“The photographs capture ordinary holiday moments from another era — young friends travelling together, sightseeing and enjoying their time in France and Ireland. For the people pictured, however, the images could represent much more than snapshots from a long-ago trip. They may be memories they have not seen for 19 years,” he said.
“Imagine getting back 140 photographs that you’ve never seen from a holiday almost two decades ago, he added.
Brian has the original photographs and is has provided a selection for publication in the paper and on our social media in the hope that someone will recognise the people pictured.
He is deliberately keeping some photographs and identifying details about the camera private, however. This will allow him to verify anyone who comes forward claiming ownership and ensure that the camera is returned to the correct person.
The search may ultimately depend on someone recognising a face, a location or a familiar moment from the photographs — or perhaps remembering a holiday taken in France and Ireland in the summer of 2007.
After 19 years, the chances of finding the original owners may seem slim, but the fact that the camera, memory card and photographs have survived intact gives the mystery an unusual opportunity for a happy ending.
Brian is now hoping that sharing the story will bring the right person forward.
If anyone recognises themselves, friends or family members in the photographs, or remembers a group who travelled from Bordeaux and Paris through Dublin, the Aran Islands and Galway in 2007, they may hold the missing piece of this remarkable story.
For nearly two decades, the camera has remained safely in Brian’s possession. Now he hopes the final journey it makes will be back to the people whose photographs it has carried all these years.
