In the heart of Galway City, inside the clinical surroundings of Quay Dental Practice, an idea began to take shape that would eventually transform the way people think about oral care.

Ten years ago this month, in 2016, dentist sisters Dr. Lisa Creaven and Dr. Vanessa Creaven, together with fellow dentist Dr. Barry Buckley, founded Spotlight Oral Care with a deceptively simple ambition: to bring the science, precision and trust of the dental clinic into people's everyday routines at home.

The founders had seen the same frustration repeatedly in their patients. People wanted whiter teeth, healthier gums and better preventative care, but the products available on supermarket shelves did not always reflect the standards they expected from their dentists. Teeth whitening, in particular, was changing rapidly as regulation reshaped the market, leaving consumers searching for products that were both effective and reassuring.

The founders began to wonder why oral care could not be approached in the same way as skincare.

Skincare had already undergone a transformation. Consumers had become accustomed to examining active ingredients, choosing products for particular concerns and building personalised routines around their needs. Oral care, by comparison, remained dominated by a relatively conventional "one-size-fits-all" philosophy.

Spotlight was created to challenge that model.

The early range centred on dentist-formulated teeth-whitening strips and specialist toothpastes, combining active ingredients with the clinical expertise of the founders. But the company's ambitions quickly extended beyond the dental chair. What began as a small business operating from a Galway practice soon demanded a very different scale of operation.

Lunch break work

In the beginning, the founders famously packed customer orders during their lunch breaks at Quay Dental Practice. As orders grew, so did the realisation that Spotlight was becoming more than an extension of their clinical work. Eventually, the sisters stepped away from full-time dentistry to concentrate on building the company.

That transition captured something fundamental about the brand: Spotlight was born from clinical practice, but designed for the consumer.

Its portfolio expanded accordingly. Toothpastes were developed around specific concerns including sensitivity, gum health and remineralisation, while the wider range grew to include sonic electric toothbrushes, water flossers, mouthwashes, whitening systems and other specialist products. One particularly distinctive element was the decision to develop products for specific life stages and needs, including pregnancy, rather than assuming that every consumer required the same approach.

At the same time, sustainability became increasingly central to the company's identity.

The founders recognised that oral care has traditionally relied heavily on plastic packaging and disposable products. Spotlight sought to rethink that footprint, introducing toothpaste tubes made from sugarcane and recyclable materials, while developing floss using recycled plastic waste. The company's stated ethical commitments also include cruelty-free and vegan-friendly formulations, alongside initiatives designed to address waste elsewhere in the dental industry.

Considered

The ambition was not simply to make oral care more attractive, but to make the entire category feel more considered.

That combination of clinical credibility, beauty-led branding and sustainability helped Spotlight move beyond its Galway origins. Early investment provided the resources to scale, including backing from Dermot Desmond's IIU fund and a €12 million investment from Development Capital in 2021. As the business expanded, its ambitions became increasingly international.

Ireland and the UK provided the foundations, with Spotlight appearing through retailers including Boots, Brown Thomas and Tesco. The United States then became a major focus of the company's expansion strategy. Dr. Lisa Creaven relocated to California to help lead the American operation, with the brand securing retail presence through major names including Ulta Beauty, CVS and Target.

For an Irish company that began with dentists filling orders between patients in Galway, the transformation is striking.

Yet perhaps the most interesting aspect of Spotlight's story is that its growth has not required it to abandon its original identity. The company continues to position its products around the expertise of dentists while presenting oral care through the language of beauty, wellness and personalisation.

The "Made by Dentists" proposition reinforces that connection between professional knowledge and consumer experience. It tells a simple story: the people developing the products understand the mouth not merely as a commercial category, but as clinicians who have spent years treating patients.

That philosophy has also shaped the company's approach to innovation. Rather than competing solely on traditional claims of freshness or cavity protection, Spotlight has sought to create products around particular consumer concerns and combine clinical ingredients with a more sophisticated aesthetic.

The result is a brand that sits at an unusual intersection.

It is part dental science, part beauty brand, part wellness proposition and part sustainability story. Its roots remain firmly planted in Galway, but its ambitions have extended far beyond the walls of the dental practice where it began.

Spotlight Oral Care's journey ultimately illustrates how a seemingly familiar category can be reconsidered when founders look at it through a different lens. By treating oral care with the attention traditionally given to skincare — while retaining the discipline of clinical dentistry — the Creaven sisters and their co-founder turned an everyday necessity into a global consumer proposition.

From lunchtime order-packing in Galway to international retail shelves, Spotlight's story is one of clinical insight becoming commercial ambition — and of a local Irish idea finding a place on a much bigger stage.
