A TUAM man said he was totally unaware that he was illegally in possession of a stun-gun at his home in the town.
Osaretin Aigbogun, 84 Cois Na hAbhainn, Ballygaddy Road, Tuam, came before Judge James Faughnan at the local District Court charged with the unauthorised possession of the stun-gun under the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act at Cois Na hAbhainn on June 26 last.
Judge Faughnan was shown a photograph of the implement which consisted of a large torch with the stun-gun element built into the handle.
“What do you do? Shine the torch in an animals eyes and then stun them,” the Judge asked.
Aigbogun said that he had no idea he had a stun-gun in his possession. He was out walking on the Dunmore road and found the torch. As he often walked his dog in the dark, he took the torch with him but didn’t know the stun-gun element was incorporated in the handle.
The Court heard that Aigbogun would be entitled to free legal aid and the case was adjourned for him to find a defence solicitor and until the current solicitors strike is resolved.
