Switch up your skincare for autumn

As the air turns crisp and the evenings draw in, now is the perfect time to slow down, cosy up and give your complexion a little extra attention. Autumn comes with its own challenges for your skin - the cold air outside, central heating indoors, and the constant movement between the two means your skin needs a little more help in adjusting to the season ahead.

When adapting your skincare routine for autumn, the first step is to rethink your textures. Swap lightweight summer lotions for richer creams and nourishing formulas that help protect your skin barrier from cooler temperatures and drier indoor air. A gentle cleanser, hydrating serum and moisturiser enriched with ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin or hyaluronic acid can help keep skin soft, supple and comfortably hydrated.

Then there’s central heating: wonderful for keeping us warm, less wonderful for our complexions. Heated indoor air can leave skin feeling tight and parched, so consider using a humidifier and keep a hydrating mist nearby for an occasional top-up. Applying moisturiser to slightly damp skin can also help lock in precious hydration.

Those constant journeys between chilly streets and warm interiors can leave sensitive skin feeling stressed, too. Keep things simple, avoid aggressive exfoliation and reach for calming ingredients such as panthenol, squalane and ceramides.

Autumn also means longer evenings and more time indoors, making it the perfect season to turn your skincare routine into a self-care ritual: run a warm bath, apply a nourishing face mask, smooth body lotion over freshly cleansed skin and take time to unwind. Add a candle, a good book and your favourite playlist, and suddenly skincare feels less like maintenance and more like indulgence.

And as as the darker evenings draw in, remember to keep SPF in your morning routine — even when summer feels like a distant memory, the sun can still damage your skin.
