Son charged with murder of mother further remanded in custody

A man who was charged with the murder of his mother when he appeared before Galway District Court last week was further remanded in custody when he appeared before Judge Fiona Lydon via video-link from prison on Monday.

Thirty-three-year-old Dubravko Ostojic, of Claí Mór, Ballybrit, Galway, was brought before Galway District Court via video-link on Monday, September 7, where he was further remanded in custody.

He was initially charged with assault, but this has been upgraded to murder after his mother, Milena Ostojic (65 ), died having sustained serious injuries at her home at Clai Mór, Ballybrit, on April 24.

John Martin, solicitor (defending ), said his client had very good English, and there was no need for an interpreter at an earlier hearing last week.

At Monday’s hearing, Garda Sergeant Damien Prendergast said it had been intended to serve a book of evidence on the accused at the hearing but, as the DPP indicated, the book was not yet ready, so he asked for a further remand in custody of the defendant.

Judge Fiona Lydon granted the application. She said last week that due to the seriousness of the charge, any question of bail was a matter for the High Court.

At last week’s hearing, Garda Sgt Claire Heneghan told the court that the DPP had instructed that an assault charge be withdrawn. Judge Lydon struck out that charge.
