Galway is preparing to celebrate one of its most treasured traditions as the 72nd Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival returns from 25–27 September 2026, bringing together oysters, seafood, music, culture and the city’s famous hospitality for a spectacular weekend of celebration.
The 2026 programme was officially launched at M Fitzgerald’s on Quay Street, in Galway’s vibrant Latin Quarter, on Tuesday, 1 September. The launch marked the beginning of Ireland’s native oyster season, which runs from 1 September through to 30 April, and set the scene for a festival that promises to showcase the very best of Galway’s connection to the sea.
This year’s festival introduces a vibrant new street format, extending the celebrations across neighbourhoods throughout the city. From competitive oyster opening and live music to food experiences, family entertainment and maritime activities, the festival will bring Galway’s native oyster to the centre of a citywide celebration.
At the heart of the weekend will be the prestigious World Oyster Opening Championship, which will see competitors from 17 nations travel to Galway to compete for the coveted title of World Oyster Opening Champion 2026. The event has become one of the festival’s biggest attractions, combining skill, speed and spectacle in a competition that draws audiences from Galway and around the world.
The competitive action begins on Friday, 25 September, with the Irish Oyster Opening Championship at An Púcán on Forster Street at 8pm. The following day, competitors will take part in the colourful Parade of Flags, departing Eyre Square at 1.30pm and travelling to Cross Street Lower, celebrating the international competitors taking part in this year’s championship.
The World Oyster Opening Championship gets underway at 2pm on Cross Street Lower on Saturday, with an outdoor stage, special guest MCs, live commentary and a pop-up street food market adding to the atmosphere. That evening, visitors can continue their celebrations across the city before joining competitors for the official after-party at Seven Bar on Bridge Street from 10pm.
Another major attraction throughout the weekend will be the Oyster Trail, with more than 40 Galway pubs, restaurants, wine bars and cafés participating in 2026. Visitors will be able to sample oysters and seafood prepared in a variety of ways, with participating venues offering signature dishes, pairings, shucking stations, guest oyster farmers, live music and special events.
The trail is designed to encourage festival-goers to explore Galway beyond the main competition venues.
