Galway City is set to benefit from a welcome tourism boost this week as thousands of American college football fans travel to Ireland for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin.
Texas Christian University (TCU ) and the University of North Carolina (UNC ) will open the 2026 college football season at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday. With strong demand for hotel accommodation in Dublin, supporters travelling for the game are expected to stay in other parts of the country, creating an opportunity for Galway to benefit from increased visitor numbers.
Cllr Níall McNelis said the event would provide a timely boost for the city’s tourism sector, with some visitors likely to arrive early and remain in Ireland after the game.
“This is a really positive boost for tourism in Galway at a time when we want to see visitors staying longer and exploring more of what the west of Ireland has to offer,” said Cllr McNelis.
“With accommodation in Dublin under significant pressure because of the demand for this game, fans are looking at other destinations across the country. Galway is ideally placed to benefit, with its strong tourism offering, vibrant city centre, restaurants, pubs, cultural attractions and easy access to Connemara and the wider west.”
He added that the benefits could extend beyond the weekend itself, as visitors arriving ahead of the game or staying on afterwards have an opportunity to experience Galway.
“American sports fans are an important tourism market for Ireland, and events such as this give us an opportunity to showcase Galway to people who may be visiting the city for the first time. If they enjoy their time here, there is every possibility that they will return or recommend Galway to friends and family.”
The 2026 Classic will see TCU, from Fort Worth, Texas, take on UNC, who recently appointed legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick as head football coach. Belichick has won a record eight Super Bowls, including six as head coach of the New England Patriots.
The meeting will be only the fifth between the two universities since their first encounter in 1940, and the first time either team has played internationally.
TCU are two-time national champions and most recently reached the national championship game in 2023. UNC also has a distinguished sporting heritage, having produced legends including six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan and two-time Olympic gold medallist and FIFA Women’s World Cup winner Mia Hamm.
For Galway, the arrival of visitors connected to the game offers an opportunity to capture some of the tourism spend generated by one of the biggest sporting events on the Irish calendar this summer.
