National Services Day Returns to Galway city

National Services Day is a special occasion dedicated to recognising and celebrating the men and women who serve our communities through the Emergency Services, Voluntary Services and Defence Services.

Held annually on the first Saturday of September, the event provides an opportunity to acknowledge the commitment, courage and invaluable contribution of those who work and volunteer to keep our communities safe and supported.

This year, Galway is taking a maritime theme for National Services Day, with a unique display planned along the city’s docks and marina. A Navy vessel, Revenue Cutter and a selection of historic boats will form the centrepiece of the celebrations, offering the public an opportunity to get a closer look at some of the vessels and organisations that have played an important role in Ireland’s maritime and emergency services.

The maritime displays will be complemented by static displays from a wide range of Emergency, Voluntary and Defence organisations. These displays will provide visitors with the chance to meet personnel, learn more about the work they carry out and discover the vital role these services play in Galway and communities across the country.

The day will begin at 11am with a Commemoration Ceremony at Galway City Hall, providing a fitting opportunity to remember and honour those who have served their communities and recognise the dedication of those continuing that tradition today.

At 12pm, personnel will take part in a parade from Galway City Hall to Galway Docks. Members of the public are encouraged to come along and show their support as the parade makes its way through the city. The parade route is included in the attached information.

Following the parade, the main event will take place at Galway Docks from 12.45pm until 3.30pm. Visitors will be able to explore the static displays, view the maritime vessels and meet representatives from the participating organisations.

National Services Day is an important opportunity for Galway to come together and show appreciation for the many people who give their time, skills and dedication in the service of others.

Everyone is warmly invited to attend and support what promises to be an enjoyable and memorable day for all ages.
