The Safe Routes to School (SRTS ) Scheme for Scoil na bhForbacha has now reached the construction stage, with a contractor appointed and construction works scheduled to commence in mid-September.

The SRTS Scheme, funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority, invites schools to create safer spaces and infrastructure for students.

In Furbo, the long-awaited project will deliver significant safety enhancements for pupils, parents, staff, and the wider community traveling along the R336 through Furbo.

Among the key measures to be delivered are:

• A raised signalised pedestrian crossing on the R336 directly opposite Scoil na bhForbacha.

• A second signalised pedestrian crossing on the R336 adjacent to the Montessori facility and near the filling station.

• Enhanced school zone safety measures including Safe Routes to School signage, road markings and pencil bollards.

• Improved pedestrian infrastructure designed to create a safer and more accessible environment for children walking, cycling and scooting to school.

Local TD John Connolly welcomes the confirmation, saying, "The safety of children travelling to and from school must always be a priority, and these works will provide much-needed improvements along the busy R336."

Connolly also acknowledges the work of school management, parents, and local residents who engaged with the process. He noted that the current design reflects feedback received during earlier public consultation.

"It is particularly encouraging that local feedback has been listened to throughout the design process. This project as an investment in safer school access will improve road safety, encourage active travel and enhance the daily journey for children and families."
