A special gig for a special Galway girl will be hosted at JF Murphy’s Bar in Athenry on Saturday, August 22, from 3pm until late.
The all-day New Beat event is being organised to raise funds for 11-year-old Izzy Sallis from Mullagh, County Galway, a pupil of Scoil Íosa in Oranmore. It will showcase bands across a number of genres, including rock, punk, metal and alt folk.
Last September, Izzy went into hospital for planned scoliosis surgery, but during the procedure she suffered a devastating injury to her brain stem and spinal cord. She was left paralysed from the neck down and unable to breathe independently, and now remains dependent on a ventilator.
Izzy is awake and fully cognitive, and her family are now facing an incredibly challenging future as she is expected to require lifelong 24/7 care and specialist support.
Funds raised will help with the substantial costs of medical equipment, mobility supports, adapted transport, home modifications and ongoing care, as well as potential future treatments and medical needs.
The all-day New Beat event will feature two stages of rock, punk, metal, alternative and folk music, with performances from An Slua, The Hungry Buzzards, Yop, Black Shuck, In Athens, Infared, Rural Hate, Preachán, Odhran Ó Spáinneach, Sarah Comerford, Cara McMahon and more to be announced.
There will also be a raffle, open mic, record stall and vegan food.
Admission is €16/€11, with all ages welcome until 8.30pm, and everyone is encouraged to come along, enjoy a great day of local music and help support Izzy and her family in their fight for the future.
