The 101st Connemara Pony Show gets under way in Clifden next week, running from Tuesday August 18 to Friday August 21, with a packed programme set to draw thousands of visitors to the Galway town for what is the world’s largest gathering of Connemara ponies.
At the heart of the week is the in-hand and ridden classes, where breeders and exhibitors from across Ireland and abroad bring their ponies forward for competition, with record entries expected once again this year. Adding extra interest to the ring this time out is the attendance of renowned racehorse trainer William Mullins to open the Show on Wednesday morning as the Show’s special guest.
Away from the show ring, the week’s programme has something for every visitor. A Domestic Arts Exhibition will showcase local baking, crafts and produce, while a Dog Show runs alongside the pony classes for those bringing along four-legged companions. An Irish Dancing Competition will bring performers from the region to the stage, and live music and entertainment are promised throughout the four days, keeping the town lively well into the evenings.
Organisers say the show remains, above all, a celebration of the heritage, culture and community of Connemara, built each year on the work of volunteers, sponsors and exhibitors.
