Water restrictions will be in place until further notice on the Aran Islands to protect treated water supply as tourism and the dry weather strain infrastructure.
Uisce Éireann is advising residents, businesses and visitors to Inis Mór and Inis Oirr that nighttime restrictions have come into place from July 21.
High demand combined with recent warm and dry conditions have severely strained the islands’ supply of treated water. The nighttime restrictions are designed to relieve pressure on the treatment plan and protect continuous daytime supply of treated water.
Nationally, Uisce Éireann has also extended a hosepipe ban from July 24, prohibiting the use of hosepipes for watering gardens, washing private vehicles and leisure boats, filling domestic swimming pools, and ornamental fountains (except where use is required for commercial purposes ).
The Water Conservation Order, introduced last week in select counties, will now apply to the entire country until August 26. It is one of the most extensive water conservation measures ever applied by Uisce Éireann.
On Inis Mór, restrictions will come into effect from 10pm until 7am. Restrictions on Inis Oirr will be in place between 11pm and 6am nightly. Treated water is also being tankered to Inis Oírr to help support daytime supply.
Tony Kelly of Uisce Éireann said that these restrictions on both islands are essential to ensure a daytime supply for the Aran Islands.
“We are mindful of the impact that these nighttime restrictions can have, but they are essential to safeguard continuous daytime supply on both Inis Mór and Inis Oírr,” says Kelly.
“We are asking everyone to continue playing their part by using water wisely and reducing non-essential use wherever possible. Every small action can collectively make a real difference during this period of exceptionally high demand.
“We are also encouraging people with responsibility for properties that are currently unoccupied to check for leaks and turn off water where it is not required,” Kelly says.
Restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.
Customers are encouraged to be alert to signs of leaks on their property, such as persistent damp patches on lawns or driveways. Uisce Éireann’s First Fix Free scheme provides a free repair for qualifying underground leaks on private property once identified.
