Researchers at the University of Galway are inviting adults with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis (inflammatory bowel diseases ), or irritable bowel syndrome, who have experienced ongoing or recurrent abdominal pain within the past 3 months, to take part in a research study.
People who do not have inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome and are pain-free are also invited to take part.
The study aims to improve understanding of why abdominal pain persists in IBD and IBS by investigating the role of the endocannabinoid system (which produces the body’s own “cannabis-like” chemicals ) and the gut microbiome, and how they may influence pain and mental health. The findings could contribute to better approaches to managing chronic abdominal pain in these conditions.

What’s involved? Participants will attend three morning study visits, over six months, at University Hospital Galway, on a midweek day that suits them. Visits include questionnaires, non-invasive sensory testing, and blood, saliva, and stool sample collection.
