Gardai are calling on motorcyclists and young males to slow down and pay more attention to road conditions this Bank Holiday weekend.
Last year the August Bank Holiday saw four people lose their lives on Irish roads. Provisional figures for July 23 2009, have shown that a total of 142 people have lost their lives on the countrys roads so far this year. Of those fatalities 41 per cent have been 16 to 30-year-old men.
Gardai are asking young drivers, their parents, friends, and girlfriends to be conscious of their speed and responsibility on the roads.
Motorcyclists are being asked to consider their surroundings, and to adjust speed accordingly. Damp sections of road, and loose surfaces can prove problematic for motorcyclists for both novice and competent riders.
Enforcement is an essential part of An Garda Siochana’s objective with regard to regulating and controlling road traffic and improving road safety. However, the Gardai stress that voluntary compliance by the community is crucial in supporting its goal of reducing incidents of serious and fatal collisions.
This Bank Holiday Garda enforcement will focus on speed enforcement, and collision prone zones.
