Galway face off with their Connacht rivals in the All-Ireland quarter-final this Sunday at Tuam Stadium.
The Tribeswomen sealed a home quarter-final berth after sailing through a flawless group stage. Commanding victories over Meath and Tyrone have cemented Galway as one of the in-form teams of the championship going into the knockout stages.
In their way stands neighbours Mayo, and Galway won't need any reminding of the threat they pose. Daniel Moynihan's charges secured their third successive provincial title when they weathered a late Mayo revival to win by 1-11 to 0-11 back in May. Sunday's opponents obtained a place in the last eight when they defeated Donegal in a must-win encounter for both teams in Glenfin. Mayo rose to the occasion to run out six-point victors.
But Galway will approach Sunday's quarter-final in confident vein. The Tribeswomen enjoyed an extra week of rest on their opponents and have shot the lights out during their All-Ireland campaign to-date. Having amassed an immense 6-41 in just two games, it's clear to see why Galway are one of the favourites to lift the Brendan Martin Cup this year.
Galway have momentum in their sails, but knockout football can never be taken for granted. The Tribeswomen will have to focus on the task at hand and not look too far ahead. If Moynihan's side play to their potential, they should have more than enough to get past their arch rivals.
