Elderly cyclist dies in Connemara drowning

Foul play is not suspected in the death of an elderly Connemara man who was drowned in a Screeb river earlier this week.

Padraic Seoighe who was in his seventies, and who lived alone at Leitir Moir na Coille, Screeb, had been cycling home when it is believed he slipped and fell into the stream.

The body was spotted just before lunchtime on Monday when a passerby made the grim discovery. The emergency services were alerted and the body was taken from the shallow stream.

Attempts were made at the scene to revive the man, but efforts proved futile. His body was removed to Galway's University College Hospital yesterday afternoon.

Gardai in Galway who are investigating the circumstances of the drowning said they do not believe any foul play was involved. They believe that the man who was out cycling, lost control of the bicycle, and careered into the shallow water, unable to make an escape.

Gardai are waiting until a post mortem is concluded before determining an exact cause of death.

The discovery of the body has shocked locals who said that the man was a popular member of the community.
