After securing progression to the semi-finals of the All-Island Cup, Galway United Women return to league action on Saturday when they face Waterford in Moyne Villa.
The league table would suggest a routine assignment, but Waterford have troubled decent sides like Wexford in this campaign. They even took a two-goal lead against Athlone before eventually losing 4-2.
Part of the pressure that comes with operating from the top, however, is the expectation that will exist around games such as this. United will be expected to beat Waterford. If they aspire to be champions, they will have to wear that.
They did show another mark of champions last Saturday, coming back to win after trailing. It has been the story of the season. It is the fifth time it has happened at home out of a total of seven games.
It is incredibly encouraging but one would worry about how sustainable it is to keep giving away one-goal leads.
They do have difference makers however, and Emma Doherty proved to be that again last week. It was her seventh of the season and many have proven pivotal. Anna McGough deserves special recognition also, the 16-year-old had put United up 2-1 not long after her introduction. Despite her tender years, it was a ninth appearance of the season for the talented youngster.
The only disappointment was that a game of consequence and drama was played out in front of 142 spectators. United had attracted 925 to their big game against Athlone before having to move out of Eamonn Deacy Park. It is disappointing to lose that momentum.
The momentum on the field continues to be fantastic. United will be keen to continue this in Headford. Shortly after, second and third-placed teams Athlone and Shamrock Rovers will face off in the round’s standout fixture. There are few bad outcomes but another dent to Athlone could provide even more encouragement.
United though are taking care of business themselves at the moment.
