Classy Fitzy is ripping up the Love Island playbook

Our Fitzy has taken the Love Island playbook, flicked through it, and binned it.

He’s gone where no Love Island contestant has gone before. Seven days. That’s all it has taken for Fitzy to find the one. Sean pulled Lola to the terrace for a chat to make his strong feelings for the detective known.

“Coming in, I said I wanted somebody who’s tapped, weird, and someone who is funny. You get my humour, but you actually make me laugh too, which is kind of rare,” says the Love Island trailblazer as he stares adoringly into Lola’s eyes.

“I don’t see anyone turning my head, and I do think we do really trust each other,” he continued.

When leaving Lola asked the big question “does that mean we’re closed off?”. Fitzy response left little room for ambiguity.. Lola was buzzing and history was made. A couple locked in in the first week. Open communication and genuine connection against toxic game-playing. Fitzy is leading the charge.

Oh, and they’re going to have four kids in the next six years.

We haven’t seen a lock down from Fitzy like this since he held Aidan O’Shea scoreless in last year’s Connacht final.

A man on Love Island can just get to know one girl? He doesn’t need to get to know other women to prove how much he likes who he’s coupled with? Apparently so.

Fitzy is pushing years of Love Island tradition to the wayside.

The Galway full-back is, in the words of Lorenzo, making all the other lads “look bad”. Now, that would not be hard but nonetheless the Galwegian is the standard bearer. A shining light as to what’s possible for the male species.

But this was just the crowning moment of what has been a starring couple of cameos from the Barna man. After two episodes on the extended panel, Fitzy was reintegrated to the starting team. A cocktail night descends into chaos when the boys find out two bombshells are waiting for them. It’s an open invitation but Sean makes clear he will join strictly for wingman purposes.

What the lads don’t know is the girls at home are watching their exploits in 4K ultra high-definition on a ginormous projector. Let’s just say they don’t cover themselves in glory.

Fitzy is under pressure. The lads around him left their composure in the villa. Heads are flying left, right, and centre.

But again, this is a man who has lined out in front of bumper Croker crowds, come face-to-face with the country’s top forwards and emerged unphased. This guy doesn’t crumble.

“It would take a lot for my head to turn,” he reiterated over and over. Nerves of steel.

Still, he’s chosen for a date by fellow Irish contestant Victoria. He delivers an impeccable performance. He spends the majority of the date speaking about Lola, describing them as the parents of the villa. The girls back home love it and Lola is cheesing from ear to ear.

The lads come home to almighty carnage. The girls are fuming. Arguments are raging through the villa. Fitzy’s just happy to be back with his missus.

The Galway man’s respectful behaviour has earned himself admirers in the villa and online. His decision to close himself off so early will raise eyebrows. Love Island always throws a curveball. But if Fitzy’s performances so far tell us anything, it’s that he is not afraid to stray from the status quo.

Long may it continue.
