Cllr Alan Cheevers has callled for greater urgency to be shown by tGalway City Council regarding housebuilding in the city.

The Fianna Fail councillor made his comments following the approval of Variation No. 3 to the Development Plan last Friday, which provides zoning and capacity for an additional 5,000 residential units across the city.

“I believe that, as a local authority, we need to see significant improvements in the delivery of new residential units across the city. While it is positive to zone additional lands for housing, there are already substantial land banks that have been zoned for many years without any construction commencing.

“Ardaun is a prime example of this. Similarly, an affordable housing scheme was proposed for Merlin Park, and while planning permission has been secured and funding approved, there is still no indication of when construction will begin.

“We need to move beyond simply zoning land and focus on delivering homes. People need to see tangible progress, with housing developments getting underway and completed as quickly as possible to address the ongoing housing shortage,” he said.

Cllr Cheevers said the Council must place a stronger emphasis on translating plans and approvals into actual housing delivery for the people of the city.
