Pathways to success at Galway Community College of Further Education

Galway Community College (GCC ) of Further Education offers a wide range of courses designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience needed for success in today’s evolving job market. The diverse programmes span multiple disciplines and are carefully aligned with industry demands, creating strong pathways to further education and employment.

For students hoping to progress to higher education, GCC courses provide an excellent stepping stone. These programmes enable learners to achieve the points required for university entry or to enhance their employment opportunities through recognised qualifications. This pathway is especially valuable for those who may not have achieved their desired Leaving Certificate results or who wish to explore new vocational directions. No CAO points are required for entry.

Students can convert their QQI result, 390 points, to access over 1,200 CAO programmes. In addition, Level 6 courses at GCC can offer progression routes directly into second-year programmes in Atlantic Technological University (ATU ). The college maintains strong links with local higher education institutions, providing regular information talks and progression supports facilitated by their guidance counsellor.

A key feature of GCC is the strong emphasis on practical learning. Most courses include a work placement of one day per week throughout the academic year, allowing students to gain valuable real-world experience and build confidence in their chosen field. Students are further supported through a range of services, including disability and learning supports, career guidance, and financial supports such as the SUSI Grant and Back to Education Allowance (BTEA ). Registration fees remain affordable at €175.

GCC is known for its welcoming and inclusive learning environment, with small class sizes and individualised support. Students also benefit from flexibility, with the opportunity to transfer between courses up to the end of October. The college offers fully funded Erasmus placements, giving learners the chance to gain international work experience. Conveniently located at Moneenageisha Junction near Galway city centre, the campus features modern facilities, free parking, and a vibrant student café.
