No chewing gum allowed in Judge Faughnan’s Court

A WOMAN who was ordered to cease chewing gum when she was called to answer a charge before Ballinasloe District Court, left the building and failed to return when her case was recalled.

Mary Dawn Spain, Toher, Ballinasloe, Co Roscommon was summoned before Judge James Faughnan charged with holding a phone while driving.

When she presented herself, the Judge noted she was chewing gum in Court and put the case back for a second calling to allow her time to get rid of the offending substance.

When her case was recalled, Spain was no longer in Court. The Judge was told that she had informed a Garda that the gum was associated with a medical issue.

The Court was told the defendant had one previous conviction for speeding. In her absence Judge Faughnan imposed a fine of €200 for holding a phone while driving.
