Building a community one step at a time

What started as one woman running around local fields has grown into one of the most inclusive and community-driven fitness groups in the region.

Headford Harriers was founded in 2023 by Tina McDonagh, who said the idea came from the joy running brought to her own life and wanting others to experience the same feeling.

“The group started with me running around the local fields. It brought me so much joy I wanted others to feel the same,” she said.

The idea for the group first took shape during a meeting in Moyne Villa. Only two other people attended, but it was enough to spark what Tina describes as a running boom in Headford.

Since then, the group has gone from strength to strength, with weekly meet-ups at the Moyne Villa track attracting runners, joggers, walkers and participants taking part in the popular Couch to 5K programme.

More than 100 people have now passed through the Couch to 5K initiative, highlighting the club’s commitment to inclusivity and encouraging people of all fitness levels to get involved.

The group’s bright yellow vests have also become a familiar sight at road races across the west of Ireland and beyond, as members continue to take part in events nationwide.

“The camaraderie and friendships made are what holds the group together,” Tina said.

Headford Harriers has also become an important part of the wider Headfest programme, with this year marking the second running of the Headfest 8K Road Race.

The race will take place on Friday, May 29. While online registration has now closed, organisers say details on in-person registration on Friday evening can be found on the Headfest and Headford Harriers social media pages.
