Celebrating nurses and midwives at Galway University Hospitals

Throughout the month of May, the extraordinary dedication of nurses and midwives is celebrated around the world, with International Day of the Midwives taking place on Tuesday, May 5, and International Nurses Day on Tuesday, May 12.

Galway University Hospitals (GUH ) are proud to acknowledge the compassion, professionalism and unwavering dedication shown by nurses and midwives every day and night.

From supporting patients through illness and recovery to guiding families through some of life’s most significant moments, nurses and midwives remain at the very heart of patient care.

Marie Burns, Director of Nursing, Galway University Hospitals, paid tribute to nursing staff and said, “Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system. I am grateful to work with such wonderful teams across Galway University Hospitals. Their skill, kindness and commitment make an enormous difference to patients and families every day.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank all our nurses and student nurses across our hospitals for everything you do to help others each and every day. We are deeply grateful for the care you provide, often during some of the most difficult and vulnerable moments in people’s lives.”

Anne Marie Grealish, Director of Midwifery, Galway University Hospitals, highlighted the profound impact midwives have on women and families. “We are very fortunate to have such dedicated and exceptional midwives at Galway University Hospitals. Midwives have the privilege of supporting women and families during one of the most important journeys of their lives.

“Their compassion, expertise, and advocacy ensure mothers and babies receive exceptional care from pregnancy through to birth and beyond. Thank you for all that you do without hesitation.”

Patients across the hospital and maternity services shared heartfelt appreciation for the staff who cared for them.

Noleen Donlon, who recently gave birth to baby girl Alannah Tierney, reflected on her maternity experience, “The midwives made me feel safe, supported and listened to throughout my pregnancy and delivery.

“Childbirth isn’t easy, but the midwives were incredible. Their support and guidance made the whole experience feel so much smoother and less overwhelming. Their kindness and reassurance meant everything to my family and me.”

Teresa Forde, Community Midwife, Galway University Hospitals, spoke about the privilege of caring for women and newborns, “Being a midwife is more than a profession, it’s about building trust, empowering women and supporting families during unforgettable moments in their lives.

“We are privileged to have the opportunity to form strong relationships with the mothers. Our work is very meaningful and brings huge job satisfaction with it. Evidence proves that women having continuity of care have better pregnancy and birth outcomes.”

Teresa Feeney, Clinical Nurse Manager 2, St. Dominic’s Ward, UHG, described the rewarding nature of nursing and said, “Nursing is about caring for people when they need it most. Every day brings challenges, but it is incredibly rewarding to know you can make a positive difference in someone’s life. I’m grateful for our amazing, supportive team who work tirelessly every day. It’s a privilege to work alongside such dedicated colleagues.”

Chris Kane, Hospital Manager, Galway University Hospitals, said, “Thank you to all nurses and midwives for their dedication, resilience and outstanding contribution to healthcare services and communities. Our nurses and midwives consistently bring innovation and teamwork to their practice, combining expertise with creative approaches to deliver exceptional patient care.”
